What can a body remember? What remains within it when an experience has ended, and what happens when what is inherited is not a story, but a sensation? In The Score, Michaiyla Carmichael explores the body as a site of memory and record, where trauma does not belong solely to the past, but accumulates, is transmitted, and resurfaces in the present.
During the residency, this research shifted toward the womb as a symbolic center of creation, memory, and transmission. Expanding on the work Matriarch (2025), Carmichael confronts the relationship between pain, trauma, and bodily disconnection.
In the face of a history that continues to be contested and suppressed, Carmichael asserts Black art as a space for preserving memory, political education, and the construction of collective truth. The Score does not propose a resolution to this debt; rather, it offers a score composed of silences, repetitions, and pauses, making visible what history has refused to heal.
