About

Thank you for visiting Unredact Art. My name is Michaiyla Carmichael. I am a multimedia artist that is inspired by Black history and culture in the U.S., and passionate about the constant fight for justice and equity by our communities. I am mainly self-taught and work with various mediums, from painting and drawing to textiles and graphic design. I studied political science, African-American studies, and peace and justice studies, which I consistently reference and incorporate into my art.

As a teen, I began For the Culture Couture—hand-painted, up-cycled clothing for advocacy and activism—which debuted in NYFW 2018. Currently, I am working on an ongoing series, The Score, exploring the concept of The Body Keeps the Score, by looking at the intergenerational legacies of trauma rooted in American slavery and compounded by the injustices and exploitation of every generation since. At a time where Black history is being banned, DEIA initiatives and “wokeness” are being weaponized, and our hard fought rights are being repealed—the role of Black art, history, and representation is as urgent as ever. The fight continues.

Based in Jersey City and New York.
